Between the often snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas and the city heat of Marrakech, you can find the small town of Ouirgane nestled in a valley among rolling foothills and located alongside the Nfis river. It is a great base for exploring the valley and the High Atlas and there are plenty of options for hikes of any length. Still under-discovered by tourists, it’s a peaceful and tranquil area which boasts some stunning scenery, including the local barrage, and we very much recommend it for a visit off the usual beaten track.
Where To Stay
Domaine Malika is a beautiful gem of a hotel set in a fantastic location in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. It has a feeling of exclusivity with only seven rooms and suites which are all stylish and luxurious without being fussy or pretentious. The hotel offers a relaxing hammam, a large pool and exceptional service. We highly recommend this for a retreat after the hustle and bustle of Marrakech or as a base for trekking in the area. Prices start from around £100 for a double room.
L’OLIVERAIE DE MARIGHA
L’Oliveraie de Marigha boasts spacious and comfortable bungalow suites hidden in its beautiful, large grounds. Secluded paths wind through olive trees and gardens and by the tranquil pools, and all this is set against a stunning backdrop of the High Atlas mountains… a superb setting for a retreat! It’s also a great base for exploring the area – hiking and trekking in the foothills and higher up. Enjoy a night here from £65 for a double room
Situated in a small village of Tassa Ouirgane at the end of the Azzadene River valley and on the very edge of the Toubkal National Park, this Berber guesthouse is a great base for trekking and mountaineering – or for just taking a retreat away from city life. Decorated in typical Berber colours and designs, Dar Tassa offers a true experience of local culture and seeks to be both eco-friendly and well integrated into the neighbouring village. We love this guesthouse for its warm welcome and simplicity and, of course, for its stunning location. Prices for a double/twin from £21.
Kasbah Africa is a place where you can fully relax: with only eight stone-built suites all with panoramic mountain and river views, you know you are guaranteed both privacy and soul-refreshing beauty. We love the attention to detail – the handmade walnut furniture, the telescope provided for stargazing and the binoculars for wildlife spotting – and also the excellent, personal service. There is a good size pool set in ample grounds where you can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the valley. Prices start from £100 for a suite.
What To Do
The Ouirgane area offers numerous options for great days out hiking. Less busy than the Imlil valley – and milder in climate – but just as stunning, you can explore this area with its abundant flora and fauna and also get a taste of traditional Berber life as you pass through its ancient villages.
Ouirgane is a great base for making the most of the great trails around the High Atlas mountains – an ideal location for an adventurous mountain-biking trip. With options for every level of experience you can enjoy the amazing scenery and great tracks as you are coached by our experienced and professional biking guides. Choose from full or half day options
We are pleased to be able to offer horse-riding treks in the Ouirgane area for a different way to explore this beautiful countryside. Choose from a full or a half day trip and saddle up to take in the rich hues and peaceful valleys of the High Atlas foothills.
